Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo (Cart Puppetry) Show/Workshop

487

The Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo, a traditional puppetry show that began in the Edo period, is designated as an Intangible Cultural Asset by the government of Japan and the Tokyo metropolitan government. Each puppet is operated entirely by one skilled puppeteer, who sits on a three-wheeled box. The Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo is enjoyed at reception parties, and what is more, the Iemoto (head master) and members from the Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo Nishikawa Koryu Troup offer hands-on opportunities to experience puppet control.
