Hachioji, a city that flourished as a post town along the Koshu-kaido Road in ancient times was best known as the "town of textiles” in the early Showa period for being the only area with the Hanamachi or geisha districts in the Tama District. As many as 20 geisha girls still perform to entertain their guests today. Their sophisticated dances and Shamisen performances are enjoyed at reception parties and traditional restaurants in the local area. This program is very popular among female tourists, too.
